Hey there Welcome to the Mouse House readers!  I’m so happy to visit and share my Handcrafted Holiday idea with you.  I have long admired Hayley’s creations, especially her home interiors and creative and adorable fashions for her son and daughter.

Since sewing is my art of choice and my older daughter Arden who is four likes to wear dresses more than anything else, sewing a dress seemed a natural pick.  I was intending to design and sew a pretty Christmas dress to share, but when I went searching for the perfect fabric, this colorful and cozy sweater knit practically leaped into my shopping cart.  Does fabric ever speak to you like that?  I started thinking “why should Christmas and other winter holidays have all the glory; why aren’t there special outfits for Thanksgiving?

This fabric told me it wanted to be a comfy, cozy dress perfect for enjoying Thanksgiving dinner with family.  Can’t you just picture her curled up in front of a warm fire enjoying hot cocoa after feasting on turkey, sweet potatoes and green beans?

I grabbed a dress that fits Arden well and drafted the pattern pieces from that, adding seam allowances and changing the bodice to criss-cross in the front.  The skirt is a simple a-line.  Add some purple sparkly knit for the neck band, bodice band and cuffs and it was ready to go.  This tutorial goes into detail on how to sew a similar sweater dress.

With the leaves falling in Michigan and the crispness of the fall air, our backyard and front door made a perfect backdrop for photos.

Arden loved how cuddly the soft sweater knit was and said it kept her very warm.

It was from JoAnn and there was another colorway as well. It is a bit scratchy inside so she wears a shirt and tights underneath.
