So, what do you do when your son requests a “Number Party” and is completely insistent on it for almost a year? Well, you throw him the best darned number party you can manage! As one might imagine, this theme isn’t exactly widely used and most certainly won’t be found in stores, so everything must be made from scratch and with a LOT of imagination.
Presenting:
Ethan’s Number Party
(…which we threw together 24 hours in advance!)
Birthday boy is turning 5 years old!
How did that happen???
Ethan asked for numbers everywhere
and numbers everywhere is what he got!
Does anyone want to guess how long it took me and Garrett to hang numbers the night before?
It took as long as it takes me to drink 2 glasses of wine. Not too shabby!
I WISH I was able to get a good photo of his precious face when he came downstairs the morning of his party.
He was in AWE of the numbers everywhere!
Then, it was time to set up for the party.
Since there is no “protocol” for a number party, we just went for it!
Decorations, cake, favors, drinks…
everything was easily coordinated with numbers
I literally made the cake the day of the party…
super easy and the number candles
really made it special.
Everyone loved it, especially Ethan.
No joke…
this is the first year Ethan has enjoyed his party.
No tears, no yelling, no fits.
For just ONE day,
we felt like we “defeated” Autism.
That makes me so incredibly happy.
Gift time!
Guess what Ethan’s favorite gift was!!!
These two kids make me smile every single day.
LOVE.

What a lovely party for a five year old. You made the comment that this was the first time there was no melt down, etc. Did you know children can sometimes react to food dyes in that manner? maybe the white cake and white frosting contributed to the lack thereof. 🙂
Ashley Quite Frankly posted about your clothing competition which led me to this post…so great of you and SUCH a cute party! I don’t have any kids but worked with special needs children for a while so I know how big of a feat it is to have a regular good day. Good job, you all look happy!
pr&p led me here. I love your style, and I love your honesty. i also have a 5-year-old who is on the autism spectrum. It’s not easy, but it’s the most magical, challenging, rewarding experience in the world. Your pr&p entries made me a fan. You totally have my vote! 😀
I was just searching through Pinterest for ideas for my 6 year old’s birthday because he requested a number party also! I was so excited to find this! The only idea I had was using all the number candles. I loved the idea of the hanging numbers! And while reading your blog, I see your son is on the autism spectrum, mine is as well!! Thank you so much for sharing your ideas and your son’s day!

Thanks for sharing! I want to do the same party for my son who is turning 5 in two weeks and I’d love to steal your ideas, I’m not very crafty at all though. Did you make the number cutouts that you hung on the chandelier? ANd where did you get the banner and water labels? They are perfect!

The number cut outs on the light fixture were actually from the office section of Target…. right near the poster board section you will see packs of paper numbers!
The water bottle labels and banner were found here (go to the bottom and you will see the links: http://freebies.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=freebies&cdn=hobbies&tm=5&f=00&su=p284.13.342.ip_&tt=3&bt=1&bts=17&zu=http%3A//www.piggybankparties.com/oink/2011/09/the-crew-introducing-mayra-rivera.html
THANK YOU so much for your response! You saved me so much time and $!!! I really appreciate your help. My son is also on the spectrum and he LOVES numbers! I’ve always dreamt of giving him a numbers party and I searched pinterest and saw your blog. Thank you for the wonderful idea. It makes me smile to think of how Ethan looked the day of his party 🙂 I hope that I can make Frankie just as happy!
Oh, you are SO welcome!!! It makes me so happy that I could help you out…. I hope Frankie has an awesome birthday!
Thanks so much for the link to the printables….I’ve been looking for something like this. Your party looked fantastic!
Thank you SO MUCH for posting! Our son is also turning 5 and on the Spectrum. He wants a numbers party! I’ve been frantically searching the web and found this lovely page. How inspiring! Can you tell me how you made your son’s shirt?
Hi Michelle! I am so glad that I could help! My son’s shirt was so easy…. regular store shirt. Then, I cut out a large number 5 out of fabric and used Wonder Under to iron it on to the shirt and then did a straight stitch all around it. Here is a similar tutorial on my blog:

I feel like I’m reading the future. I found this blog because I’m searching for ideas for a numbers themed birthday party – the theme my son requested. My son also has autism and he also went through a phase where he loved clocks!!!!!! Email me at ajshutt@hotmail.com if you ever want to “chat!” 🙂
I searched and searched online for Numbers Party as my autistic almost-4 year old is demanding numbers! (it was an alphabet party last year) Thrilled to find a similar guy with like-minded interests and see a lovely party! Thanks! I will have to see what you did for his 6th and see if we are wanting the same thing in a year (:
Thank you so much for sharing your great ideas! My son is turning 5 this weekend and also in love with numbers. Makes me happy to see another sweet boy who turned 5 and had such a fun party. I will be stealing lots of your ideas, thank you!
