Our family would like to introduce our newest addition, Ainsley Catherine! She was born on Friday, September 11, 2009 at 8:41pm. She weighed 6 pounds 10 ounces and was 19.5 inches long. I cannot believe that she is already almost 5 weeks old, but time flies when you are exhausted, I suppose!
I was scheduled to be induced on September 11th at 39 weeks and 3 days gestation because my doctors didn’t want me to go past my due date since they were worried about some of my medical conditions.
Garrett and I went to the hospital early that morning, excited and anxious. It took quite a while for the doctors to get things going with the induction, but it finally got started around 11am. I began receiving a medicine called Pitocin at that time, which is a medicine that triggers the onset of labor and once I got the pitocin, the contractions began coming at 3-5 minute intervals and were very painful, but tolerable. When there were no signs of significant progress by 6pm, the doctors decided it would be best to break my water. I was hesitant to have this done because of the possible complications, but I knew that it was my only choice if I wanted to have a baby soon. They broke my water around 6:30pm and the pain went from tolerable to intolerable within a half hour. This was a medication-free labor/delivery, so my only relief was to eat my delicious ice chips. haha. Breaking my water must have kickstarted the labor because I was really progressing, very quickly. By 8:30pm, I told the doctors that I felt like it would be soon and they told me I still had a little ways to go so they all left the room. At 8:37pm, I screamed at Garrett that he needed to get the doctors because the baby was coming whether they liked it or not. He ran as fast as he could down the hallway of the hospital and told them to get in my room, ASAP! While he was out, I was basically delivering the baby all on my own! The doctors ran into the room and didn’t even have time to set up. Ainsley was out in a few pushes!
The first thing I heard them say when she came out was “Wow, she has a head full of dark hair!” I couldn’t believe it! Then, MY first words were “Are you sure she is a girl?” I think I asked that about 5 times before I believed them. She is such a beautiful, healthy baby and I was so extremely happy to finally see her.
We are having a wonderful time with her at home. Sure, it’s been quite an adjustment and it will be quite some time before our home life returns to some sense of normalcy, but we couldn’t imagine it any other way. Ethan has been wonderful with her so far and he has adjusted well as a big brother. Ainsley has been a champion eater and has already gained at least 2.5 pounds!
Are you ready for a slew of pictures? Well, here are just a handful of our super new family!
