After much thought and consideration, we bought Ethan a harness (aka LEASH). Back in the 80’s, when I was a kid, the kinds of leashes they had available were pretty horrible looking, but now they have cute, adorable choices!
I never, ever thought I would be the type of parent to get one. However, as many of you know, I have a disability and I have trouble walking, much less running, after a very fast toddler. When I am out with Ethan, I almost always put him in the stroller and give him a snack. It used to work out really well, with no fussing, but lately he has been antsy and wanting to get out and roam around. Unfortunately, he is not quite at the age where he can listen to directions, such as “Stop!”, “Come back here!”, and “Don’t touch the fire!” A harness is my best option at this point.
Here is the one we bought:
It’s basically a monkey backpack with a “tail” that the parent can hold on to, while their child explores their surroundings.
Here is Ethan trying it out:
I am preparing myself for negative comments while I am out with him and his harness. I am sure people will view me as a “lazy” parent that couldn’t be bothered to watch my child, but unless they want to fix my disability, then they will have to deal with it. Plus, it’s so adorable and it holds a sippy cup!

The monkey is so cute, just like Ethan.
Nobody should have anything negative to say, you are keeping your child safe from getting lost, hiding somewhere, running off, …
Holding their hand is an option, but sometimes you need two and the harness give them also some freedom do be independent within their limits.
Hey, you do what you need to do! Who cares what other people think! You’re a great mom!
I think Reggie would look cute with a monkey too! Don’t you think?
OH I love it!!! & it totally looks like Ethan LOVEs it too!
I think it is adorable and Ethan seems to like it too. Besides, as a mom you need to do what is best for you and your child so just ignore the ignorant people who might give you looks while you are out.
I think it’s so cute! I want to get one for Eli!!
I had one of those, too! I got it for the boardwalk because I new he would wanna walk and I was concerned about losing him in the crowd. People need to just mind their own business. Atleast he has a cute leash!
He looks adorable, oh and so does the monkey! LOL I can’t wait to meet you both! Oh and Garrett too.
Hayley, Ethan is getting so big! We need to do a playdate..things have been nuts lately but are finally calming down. Let me know how the ‘leash’ works, Maddie needs some type of intervention and I’m considering that as an option. I miss you guys!

Wow! He is really acting good with it on. I am interested in hearing if he will walk with you holding it. It is so cute! Tell others to “myob”. Haha, remember that?
aww… man! i wanted to get one of those for our trip… but totally forgot. he would have been much happier running on his own two feet, than strapped in his prison.. er, I mean stroller…
