When I got the email from Jess of Craftiness is Not Optional asking if I wanted to be a part of this year’s Vintage May, let’s just say I squealed out loud and my husband thought I was nuts. (well, he already thinks that, but this kind of sealed the deal.) Not only do I think Jess is so incredibly talented and awesome, but vintage sewing is the style I am always drawn to when I am creating and designing. I was so excited to begin, but in true Hayley fashion, I couldn’t make up my mind and probably spent longer brainstorming than I did actually sewing. Thanks so much to Jess of CINO and Kristin of Skirt as Top for having me join in!
Like I said, I just honestly couldn’t decide what to make. I had all sorts of ideas in my head… another Caroline? Nah. Some sort of hippie look? Not sure. Finally, I just said, let me just see what I come up with and just do it. Ironically enough, when I do that, it usually ends up being something I really love.
In the end, I created looks reminiscent of the 1950’s and 1970’s, both of which I adore.
Let’s start with the 1950’s look, which she has not wanted to stop wearing since I made it for her (score!)
The skirt was made out of an adorable gingham from Michael Levine.
The pattern is the Little Lizard King Every Day Play Skirt with a pettiskirt underneath.
The white button up is a self drafted shirt I had actually made for Ethan about 3 years ago.
The polka dotted tank is from Target.
There is the most adorable ice cream shop near me that was perfect for the photos.
Then, we headed to a local favorite place of mine.
It was twirling approved.
So, I think that just about covers the 1950’s look, no?
Next up, the 1970’s look. It could also very well pass for the 1960’s or even the 1980’s. Depends on perspective, I suppose.
The dress pattern I used was my very own Norah because it obviously has the perfect vintage vibe.
I used a thicker denim for the main dress, a super soft yellow cotton for the collar and lining, and the most perfect vintage ribbon trim as an accent.
The hair “bows” are vintage lace.
The whole look reminded me so much of a school girl from the 70’s!
Jess and Kristin, thank you so much for having me.
I am honored to be a part!
And just a sneak peek of my next patterns… coming soon!
(and there are others…)

These are so cute! That skirt is adorable, especially with the pettiskirt underneath it, and I love the trim on the dress.
I used to live near an ice cream shop really similar to this one when I was a kid! The most memorable thing in the shop was a dancing Elvis clock.
