Suz from Sew Pony and An of Straight Grain are hosting an amazing series right now, all based on the Belgian illustrations of Marcel Marlier. If you are not familiar with the Marcel Marlier books, you seriously need to google his work because you will see that it is right up my alley. I adore classic styles and silhouettes. Each of his books are these adorable drawings of a little girl in amazingly playful and timeless clothing. When they asked me to join in on their series, I knew immediately what I would make and I couldn’t be happier with it.

For my classic look, I sewed up a jacket and dress.
The dress pattern was my very own Caroline Party Dress pattern. It was created with an amazing (and ridiculously expensive) coral pink and white striped voile that I bought at Mood Fabrics NYC. The fabric is so soft and fancy, but perfectly perfect. Originally, I planned to use the fabric for myself, but I couldn’t shake the idea of a party dress for Ainsley… and I am so glad I did it. This is a dress that will be kept in her keepsake box, for sure. Granted, she won’t actually wear it to a party, and will most likely wear it to the grocery store…. but, you get the idea.
The jacket pattern was a 5 & 10 Designs, look #8. They sent me this new design book and I knew right away which look I would make. It has such a classic design. I modified the collar to be a peter pan shaped collar and added piping, but other than that, the design is the same. A few notes: I sewed the sleeve hems totally differently and it has no visible stitches.. I will try to remember to do a tutorial soon! I also didn’t do the topstitching around the jacket, instead, I used a few hand stitches.
I used a chambray with pin dot embroidery thread that was also purchased at Mood Fabrics NYC. The jacket was lined with a cream fleece for warmth.
The best part is that Ainsley still loves dressing this way. I really hope it continues for at least a few years.
(as we were taking this photo, a person drove by with the song “All About That Bass” and she thought it was so funny because she loves that song ha!)
Matching up stripes is HARD man, and I feel like I did a pretty darned good job, especially with an invisible zipper!

What a beautiful classic look. I love this jacket. I usually line with flannel for warmth, but I like the fleece idea much better. I will be trying that in my next go around. You did not find it too bulky?
